Bills Must Be Paid Bankruptcy Prestige: The Legacy Loop
Bill checkpoints, Legacy rules, Big Toni loans, and when to reset.
Quick answer
Bankruptcy is the reset you want: $50 paid bills = 1 Legacy Point
Bankruptcy is not a fail state — it is the prestige reset (VERIFIED: Steam store + both guide readings). Paid bills convert into Legacy Points at 1 point per $50 paid (VERIFIED conversion), spent on permanent rings and bracelets. Wallet cash does not convert, so before resetting, pay one more reachable bill. The one rule that shapes everything: only bill payments build permanent power.
Bill checkpoints
Known bill checkpoints from a completed route
From one completed Steam full-release route (COMMUNITY — treat as a curve guide, not a fixed master list):
| Checkpoint | Observed amount | Deadline | What it teaches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening Water Bill | $20 | Due immediately | Protect bill money before buying upgrades |
| Cycle 1 summary | 5 bills totaling $2,015 | End of first cycle | Converts to 40 Legacy Points after bankruptcy |
| Bail Bond | $250,000 | 5 days | Tests ~$50,000/day income; the real build check |
| Final Taxes | No stable fixed amount | After King Piggy | Unlocks Freedom; finish the tree before final reset |
Checkpoint values are COMMUNITY (one completed route); amounts may differ per save.
Legacy rules
How Legacy Points and rings work
- Conversion: 1 Legacy Point per $50 of paid bills. Plan around complete $50 blocks — a partial block may not produce a spendable point.
- What resets: wallet cash, hammers, skill tree nodes, perks, piggy unlocks.
- What persists: rings and bracelets bought with Legacy Points.
- Early-payment rings: pay a bill early and a ring adds one desk piggy per 4 days early; another ring adds +2% attack speed per day early, capped at 25% (VERIFIED screenshots).
Big Toni
Big Toni loans: useful once, then pure tax
Big Toni is the loan shark. Take a loan early for the achievement pair (Take a Loan / Pay Back a Loan) and repay through the entry beside your bills — it is easy to miss. While in debt, he skims your earnings, and the skim does not count toward repayment (single community source) — so it is pure tax. Repay in full as soon as a good run allows.
FAQ
Bankruptcy & prestige FAQ
Q: When should I declare bankruptcy?
A: When the next bill requires income far beyond your recent normal runs. Before resetting, pay one more reachable bill to convert the largest realistic total.
Q: Do unused wallet cash convert?
A: No — only paid bills convert. That is why "pay one more bill before reset" is the standing rule.
Q: Should I pay bills early?
A: Only after you own the early-payment rings (VERIFIED bonuses above). Early payment without them just moves the next deadline forward.
Q: What should I buy first with Legacy Points?
A: Community order: early-payment rings, then Crit/Damage rings, then the expensive post-game jewelry (COMMUNITY).
Q: Is there a final ending?
A: Yes — pay all bills (Freedom achievement) and choose Keep Playing to finish the Skill Tree before the final bankruptcy (COMMUNITY route).
