Bills Must Be Paid Skill Tree: Best Early Priority Order

The verified branch inventory, the community-settled buying order, and the mistakes to avoid — each fact labelled with its evidence level.

01

Quick answer

Best early skill tree priority: damage first, stamina second, reward third

Start with Base Damage (turn 3-hit piggies into 1-hit targets — the biggest efficiency lever), then stamina support (cap, lower drain, or restoration), then reward/loot. Buy attack speed last — early speed multiplies misses and empty swings while damage guarantees kills. The tree's branches (grip strength, caffeine, gym, wrist, luck) plus ability nodes like Rock Rain and the Electrified Hammer are VERIFIED from the Steam store description; the buying order is COMMUNITY consensus from the frozen guide set (one-hit-kill.space + whisperofthehouse, 2026-08-11). Expect the first hour to feel small; the take-off comes once perks, hammers, and the prestige layer stack on top.

Branch / nodeWhat it improvesWhen it matters
Grip strengthDamage per swingAlways — the first bottleneck
CaffeineAttack speed (with a cost)Only after damage converts kills reliably
Gym / WristStamina / swing efficiencyWhen runs end with targets alive
LuckLoot quality and rare coinsWhen the desk clears but income lags
Rock RainArea ability (hits multiple piggies)Late, for clustered desks

03

Priority order

Community-settled buying order

  1. Base Damage — turn 3-hit piggies into 1-hit targets; the single biggest efficiency lever.
  2. Stamina support — cap, lower drain, or restoration; more swings = more money.
  3. Reward / Loot — better payouts once kills are consistent.
  4. Hit Radius / Collateral — only when multiple targets overlap.
  5. Attack Speed — last; it compounds only when targets and accuracy are already solid.
  6. Special abilities (Rock Rain, Electrified Hammer) — late-game build variety.

This is a starting sequence, not a universal node order — re-read the desk every run (see the Beginner guide's four-state diagnosis).

04

Reset & combo

Reset is free; combo is the hidden multiplier

The skill tree has a Reset Skills button (VERIFIED screenshot) — you can re-allocate nodes, so experiment freely within a cycle. Combo matters: every 10 consecutive hits adds +1 combo and a single miss resets it to zero (developer-stated). Some combo-scaling nodes want long chains (a Combo Speed Plus node reportedly targets a 350-hit chain — COMMUNITY). That is why "swing deliberately" beats "swing fast".

FAQ

Skill tree FAQ

Q: What should I buy first?
A: Base Damage. Three hits to one hit is the biggest return on investment (COMMUNITY consensus across both frozen guide readings).

Q: Is attack speed bad?
A: Not bad — premature. Early speed multiplies misses and empty swings; buy it after damage, targets, and accuracy are stable.

Q: Can I undo skill points?
A: Yes — there is a Reset Skills button (VERIFIED screenshot), so treat the tree as re-allocatable within a cycle.

Q: Why does the first hour feel weak?
A: Individual nodes are small (a launch review calls them minor, e.g. "10% chance to get 5% back when paying a bill"). The take-off comes when perks, hammers, and prestige stack on top.

Q: Do skill tree upgrades survive bankruptcy?
A: No — cycle upgrades reset. Permanent progress comes from Legacy Points → rings and bracelets (see the Bankruptcy & Prestige guide).
